John Mayer's Iconic Watches

Aside from being a famous musician and America's self-dubbed ex-boyfriend, John Mayer is also an avid watch collector. In fact, one could argue that he is the most influential watch enthusiast in the world. Every timepiece he praises becomes highly sought after, as do his collabs with brands like Casio and Rolex.

John Mayer's watch collection is likely worth tens of millions of dollars, and includes both accessible and highly rare timepieces. Here are our favorite watches from his collection.

1. Rolex Cosmograph Daytona 116508

The name John Mayer has become synonymous with the Rolex Daytona over the past few years. He owns a substantial collection of different Daytona models, including rare vintage pieces. However, his most famous Daytona is the reference 116508 in yellow gold with a green dial.

He once said in an interview that he considered this watch a “sleeper hit” that would be highly coveted in the future... a notion with which experts like Pejman Ghadimi agree.

Not long after that interview, the timepiece became a hot topic in the watch community and has since been nicknamed the “John Mayer” Daytona.

The 116508 is one of Rolex’s newest Daytona models and features the reliable caliber 4130. The watch case and bracelet are made of 18K gold, which raises its value and makes it heavier on the wrist than a classic Rolex made of Oystersteel.

Recently, he's also been frequently seen wearing a "Rainbow" Daytona.

2. Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164A

John Mayer is also a big fan of Patek Philippe and owns several of the brand’s more complicated timepieces with tourbillon movements. Yet, one of his most reliable timepieces is the more subdued Aquanaut reference 5164A.

According to Mayer, it’s an essential part of his collection and his go-to option when he doesn’t want to “make a statement”. However, if you take a closer look at the dial of his watch, you’ll see the Tiffany & Co. logo, which immediately differentiates it from any other Aquanaut.

In general, the Aquanaut is one of Patek Philippe's more subtle watch designs but still packs high-end specifications, including the automatic movement 324 S C FUS. The 5164A also features a dual time zone feature, ideal for anyone who travels frequently.

3. IWC Big Pilot 5002

The Big Pilot series from IWC has been a part of John Mayer’s collection for many years. The reference 5002 was one of his most important watches during his early career, as he wore it for most of his live shows.

In doing so, he developed a close connection to this particular timepiece and considers it an excellent companion for anyone even today. He praises the utilitarian aesthetic of the watch, as well as its ability to serve as a nightstand clock thanks to its legibility.

Like every aviation timepiece, the Big Pilot series features a wide 46mm diameter with large numbers for better readability. There are newer iterations of the Big Pilot series in the market that all feature excellent automatic movements with large power reserves of up to seven days.
